What is the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)?

The CPSC is a United States government agency "charged with protecting the public from consumer products...that pose a fire, electrical, chemical, or mechanical hazard."

CPSC Regulations

• Consumer Product Safety Act (CPSA) - established the CPSC in 1972 - regulations affect all manufacturers and importers of consumer goods in the U.S.

• Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA) - expanded the CPSC's regulatory and enforcement tools, including financial penalties for non-compliance and restricts harmful substances (focusing on lead and phthalates) in consumer products, especially for children under 12

• Federal Hazardous Substances Act (FHSA) - requires warning labels for certain hazardous (corrosive, reactive or toxic) products and allows CPSC to ban and regulate hazardous substances, toys and products for children

• Child Safety Protection Act (CSPA) - expanded the FHSA to protect children from choking hazards and require warning labels and reporting of choking incidents

• Flammable Fabrics Act (FFA) - allows CPSC to create standards for manufacture of flammable clothing and furnishings (such as clothing textiles, vinyl plastic film, carpets, rugs, children’s sleepwear, mattresses, mattress pads)
